ANECDOTE
Which damage did Dad make with the
ball?
He said it was on the right hand side.
They told him, " Don't bounce
the ball in the house." And that's what happened. And that
picture meant a lot to the whole family. That's why they had
copies made for everybody.
So your grandpa did that.
He was only eight or ten or something.
He should have known better. But everybody wanted a copy of the
same picture because they had grown up with it.
There is no signature on there. Where
did the picture come from in the first place? Does anybody know?
Yeah, it came from the Minburn Sports
Day. Mom says she watched the man painting it.
Yeah.
You don't remember anything about the
painting except that you saw it on that easel?
Yeah, that's right. And that I knew
that it was a copy of the old one, because it looked like somebody
had thrown a ball through the old one or something. [Laughs]
Well, that's what happened actually.
[She laughs]
You didn't hear that story at the reunion?
No, I didn't.
Uncle David bounced a ball through
it.
Oh, did he?
When He was a kid.
Oh, I bet he was in big trouble for
that.
There is no signature on there. Where
did the picture come from in the first place? does anybody know?
Yeah, it came from the Minburn Sports
Day. Mom says she watched the man painting it.
Oh.
You know they are like buskers only
they are painters.
Yeah.
She doesn't know how it got into Grandma
Park's house. It either was gifted to them or they bought it
at the Sports Day from the man.
Maybe.
No signature.
Well, he's just out there dashing them
off, to make a living I guess. So they moved into Great Grandma's
house to take care of her when Grandpa Park died. When my grandpa
sold all his land and moved to Vegreville they took that picture
with them.
Oh, I believe so. yeah.
By then the cardboard was so brittle
it just broke when Uncle David's ball bounced against it.
Somebody said your mother was present
at the time that one was painted.
Yeah. Sandy says he doesn't know if
that is true or not but Mom insists she watched the man paint
that when she was a child.
She's older than Sandy so....
Yeah,
So he might not remember. He might
have been too young at the time.
It's a good thing I didn't throw it
out. I was going to.
Another picture is coming. Hold the
whole show!
We're going to unveil another masterpiece!
Do you want to ring the bell?
I don't have a bell.
It's fascinating how they all looked
at the original and came up with a different.....
Yeah. He told me at dinner that he
threw the ball through it. I asked Sandy if he could remember.
He said he wasn't there. I said that's too bad because then he
could have blamed you. [laughs]
So the only thing you remember about
it is.......
The picture?
Yes.
It hung on the south wall in the living
room at Vegreville and one time Dave was bouncing a ball off
the wall and he bounced it through the corner of the picture.
Yes.
So Mom had to, ah, patch it up the
best she could. [chuckles]
Well, I just heard that story from
Bessie too when I talked to her the other night.
When I referred to that painting she
said, "Yes, Dave was bouncing a ball around when he wasn't
supposed to. It wasn't allowed. "
Yes.
Oh! That's the original is it? I guess
so.
Yeah, that's the original.
That got hit with the ball once. Heh,
heh, heh.
Was it you or David that hit it with
the ball?
David. David or some of his friends.
I don't know.
He had friends there?
Yeah. I don't know if he could have
done it in Vegreville or in Minburn. Minburn, I guess.
No, it was in Vegreville.
Oh, maybe, yeah.
The ball hit the corner there, above
the tall trees.
Yeah.
I was wondering if you remember any
more about when you bounced the ball into it.
I remember distinctly. I think I was
probably only about 13 years old. I shouldn't have been bouncing
the ball in the house and I knew that. I was told not to do that.
So you were told....
I was throwing it against the wall
and catching it you know.
Yes.
And I didn't throw right once. I threw
a little crooked.
And he was 12 or 13 years old.
I didn't get a lickin' for it but I
felt so bad because I knew my mother felt so bad.
Because the painting was spoiled.
Yeah.
Ohh.
