VIEWING

See the mountain goes this way. she's got the mountain on this side and nothing over here..

Yeah.

So I say it's just stylized . He says that they're dyslexic. [laughs]

Because it's the opposite way. It's not flowing that way. It's a mirror. But the rest of it isn't a mirror image.

So you think the painter was dyslexic.

No. She informed me that she deliberately likes to change things.

Right. It's stylized. More so than the rest of them. The waves. Because it's the opposite way. It's not flowing that way. But the rest of it isn't a mirror image.

I hoped you'd bring some of your paintings today but you didn't.

Well, everybody's seen them. There's nobody here--I don't think--that hasn't seen them.

But seeing them once isn't enough.

I like the water in this one the best.

What is it that you like about that one?

The waves--the foamy part.

Yeah, there's quite a bit of foam on that. But this looks very watery even though it doesn't have much foam.

Yeah, I figure there's a little too much action the water over there. It's possible that it could be more of a rapids, of course.

Yeah. Well she said she likes to change things. She had a different idea of what she wanted to do with the rocks there.

Oh yeah.

But she informed me that she deliberately likes to change things.

Right. It's stylized. More so than the rest of them. The waves.

This one has life too.

And the perspective's really good too.

It's much more of a long view. It really feels like you're looking into it.

Yeah.

WINDOW

I ordered 88 prints for the window.

Ohhh. Aren't they beautiful! They're gorgeous!

And...This is Corel Draw. Fortunately for me their Quark application wasn't bringing up the full colour. They had to go to Corel Draw to solve it. So compare these.

Oh, gorgeous. Whoooo, whooo whooo.

Now I'm going to oil these because otherwise the landscape won't show when you're standing inside.

Oil them?

Yeah, because they're going to go...You know that grid on the Stride window?

Yes.

Each of these is going to be cut to fit a square on the grid.

Yes, I don't know what you mean by oil.

If I put oil on this paper, then when you're standing inside the gallery looking out you'll see the whole landscape.

Oh, yes.

Yes. yes.

Ohhh.

What a beautiful answer that is. I love that answer. And I love the idea of it being oiled, of course.

Walnut oil.

As in oil paint.

Yeah.

[Laughter]

Says she who doesn't use them any more.

Oh, these are just exquisite. And I love them because of the recursive grid. How come this grid shows up on here like this? Did you lay that out?

I'll tell you what it is actually. If you could lay these out and go back 40 feet. It should beautifully form into a bas relief. Looking as if someone had done a mosaic with tiles sitting in and out unevenly.

Ohhh, really.

So if you go across the street you'll see like a bathroom tiled landscape except imagine that the tiles go in and out instead of lying flush.

Ohhhhh.

All this happened just because I wanted a few images to work from. Diana volunteered to take landscape images home on a disc. She ran them through some filters.

I seeee.

Some computer people eschew the idea of just using a filter.

Oh, but.

She was doing a simple thing to take part in the project. I took the 12 images she brought me. Kim and I were looking at them and saw that we could count so many of these per square so we started counting and measuring and ah, ....

It's really exquisite.

So Kim masterminded this whole thing for me.
